A poem for Mum

Created by Janet 3 years ago

You taught us how to walk and talk
And how to tie our shoe
You picked us up when we fell down
And cuddled us to you

As we grew up you always seemed
To know just what to say
To hold our hands and mop our brows
And chase our fears away

Never one to take a side
Not wanting to offend
Hating conflict, rows and tears
Giving love and smiles, a friend

A Mum is what you always were
Right to your very core
Not only just to Ann and I
But to so many more

You may have borne two daughters
But loved two sons as well
Your sisters and your brother
All with love to tell

Cousins, friends and neighbours
All shown your gentle ways
A smile, a hug, a greeting
Or simply just a wave

You showed your love for everyone
Gave everything you had
But you saved the very best of it
For your one true love, our Dad

I haven’t met a person yet
Whose life you didn’t touch
With your gentle charm and innocence
You are loved so very much

So pure of heart and kind of soul
You never made a fuss
Just always giving love and care
To every one of us

You glowed with pride so many times
For all your grandkids too
You’d wriggle to the front of shows
To get the best of views

The ooo’s and ahh’s on firework night
Your cheeky little grin
The joy you had at Christmastime
That lit us all within

The singing on our birthdays
Your hip hip hip hoorays
To know that in your heart of hearts
It was always a special day

I feel so very fortunate
To have spent so much time with you
Our lives forever intertwined
Your love for us so true

We need to learn to live our lives
Throughout the days to come
Without the daily “how are you?”
Or the texts that end “luv Mum”

Our memories are in our hearts
They’ll have to see us through
But what I wouldn’t give now Mum
For one more day with you
